The Montessori Birthday Circle

All the kids in Mira's class sat in a circle around a "work rug" with a candle to represent the sun and a globe to represent the earth.

Ms. Maria, Mira's teacher and master of the ceremony, asked us to bring in a picture of Mira for each year of her life.

Ms. Maria explained that “We live on the earth and the earth goes around the sun. Each time Mira goes around the sun, she is one year older," and she had Mira walk with the globe around the sun.

Each year started on May 14, with Ms. Maria announcing how old Mira was that year and holding up the next picture. Mira would walk the picture around the class circle so all her friends could see as we described what Mira was like at that age.

To celebrate each year the kids would sing as Mira walked the earth around the sun. YouTube Video

Wish you were there? Don't worry, we still have one more video.

After we talked about all four years, everyone sang Happy Birthday and Mira blew out her candle.

And after the candle, everyone had cupcakes!

Daddy had to leave to go back to work, but Mommy got to stay for musical chairs. Woo-hoo!

  2. I thiguht of the first grade teacher when I painstakingly typed up the description of the event. Glad you enjoyed. And please remember to make your birthday crowns sturdy; we wore it all weekend long.

  3. It was just so super significant in so many ways. I am still bragging about it to people! Did you make that crown? That's impressive! What's the trick to a sturdy crown?

  4. No, her teacher made the crown. The kids all expect it. That's why I was telling you to make good ones, not the mamas.
